The King of Kananaskis Country Rides

The trailhead for this description of the ride is the Dawson staging area which is located off of Hwy. 68. Check a road map before starting out as a wrong turn can kinda mess up yoour day on this one. That all said, the Dawson trailhead is pretty well marked and quite obvious, even for the directionally challenged.

This ride has almost all the ingredients to be a perfect ride.

  • It has a great climb.
  • It has a spectacular ridge traverse. World class.
  • It has an epic downhill.

Cox Hill - the king of Kananaskis downhills.

Then what's it missing? For one thing it doesn't end at a bar...for another there is a 10 km stretch of road between that has to be navigated. Car shuttle makes this section rather painless.

Are we there yet. Three guesses...

If you don't have this luxury just try to kid yourself it is a fun warm up. Usually it's not. At best it's a 10 km shlog along an undulating gravel road with pretty damn good scenery.

At worst it's a dust fest you get to share with SUVs, RVs and guys with big pickups and horse trailers. Except they have their windows rolled up and you just get to close your eyes, cover your mouth with your sleeve and hope for the best. Eat My Dust becomes more that just your favourite Ron Howard movie - it becomes your pre-ride snack.
